Ten years on one job is noteworthy, 20 years is to be commended and 50 years on one job should be celebrated!   And celebrate is exactly what Lexion (Joseph) Louissant did on March 23, 2009 to commemorate 50 years of dedicated service to Ardastra Gardens, Zoo & Conservation Center.  At an informal luncheon held in his honour, when asked the secret to marking half a century at Ardastra, “Joe” remarked, “Lots of patience and hard work!” – attributes we all can use as on our personal career paths.

A very young Lexion came to Ardastra in 1959 and was taken under the wing of Mr. Hedley Edwards, founder of Ardastra.  Mr. Edwards, along with another flamingo trainer, gave “Joe” lessons in training the flamingos.  Lexion still works with the birds to this very day and has enlightened multiple generations and celebrities about these brilliantly-coloured birds.

While “Joe’s” passion is working with the flamingos, he also enjoys gardening and working with the parrots.  He and Toby, a Moluccan Cockatoo, have formed a very special friendship over the years.  Lexion and Toby, along with their side-kick Salvador, a Blue & Gold Macaw, are also a premiere attraction at Ardastra offering visitors a unique photo opportunity at the end of each visit.

As the flamingos have become a staple at Ardastra, so has “Joe”!  We congratulate Lexion “Joe” Louissant for 50 years of dedicated service.
